Don’t Look Like A Sack of Potatoes

I’ve noticed that a lot of guys look like they are either suffocating in their shirts (almost had to give one guy CPR) or they look like a sack of potatoes; and no body wants to look like that. So as I was sitting in my chair, thinking about what to write, I decided to talk about how to get the right shirt and expand your style; all at the same time! So let the search begin; the search for the right shirt! (did you see what I did there (: )

First off, if you are building up your wardrobe keep in mind that you want to find stuff that you can/would wear with several outfits. The rule of thumb I use when I’m shopping is if I can wear this piece with three different outfits then I will get it; otherwise, I put it back. It’s a great way to stop wasting money on something you can only wear with one outfit and keep you from making spur-of-the-moment purchases. Now, it is okay to buy a few statement pieces (like a really cool patterned shirt or a blazer) just don’t over buy.

Here we are, the moment have been waiting for:

  • The DOs and DONTs of Shirts:
    • DO: find your fit.
      • You want to find the perfect fit for you. So when you go shopping do not be afraid to ask a sales associates to help you find the right fit, that is what they are there for. Below I have listed some different shirt fits so you can be more familiar with them and make your shopping a little easier.
      • Slim-Fit shirts feature an athletic and shaped look, with narrow sleeves and armholes; as well as a slimmer cut to the body.
      • Fitted shirts feature a tailored and refined look, with fitted sleeves and comfortable armholes and a shaped body.
      • Classic Fit shirts are more comfortable and relaxed, with bigger sleeves, eased armholes and an eased fit to the body.
    • DONT: buy a shirt that is too big or too small.
      • You need to try on the shirt before you buy because every shirt is going to fit a little bit different. You need to make sure that it fits in all the right areas (the shoulders, arms waste) and that it isn’t haning off your body. You don’t want the shirt to crinkle up and look tight and you don’t want it to be loose and look big.
        • How to know if it’s too small: the shirt will feel tight around the armholes, will crinkle up around the waste and buttons and will look like it is being stretched around the arm.
        • How to know if it’s too big: the shoulder seams will hang off your shoulder, the sleeves will sag and the body will look baggy.Just pay attention to fit when shopping for shirts beacause you don’t want to waste time and money on something that doesn’t fit like it should.

    • DONT: forget about patterns and fabrics.
      • Patterns are a great way to add variety to your shirt collection.Block-colors and stripes are more associated for business or formal attire, so why not try a red and blue plaid shirt or a nice pink block-colored shirt?Patterns such as floral and Hawaiian and polka-dots are a great way to add something new to your casual looks.Fabrics like silk are going to be light and will allow your body to breath a little more. Cotton is going to be thicker and will hold up more then silk would and is easier to keep from wrinkling.

    • DO: look for unique detailing.
      • One thing to look at is the collar of the shirt. Band and Cuban collars are trending and look great with casual outfits and they are taking a modern twist on classic looks.
Along with that, patterned or different colored collars have become a trend over the past couple of seasons and it really gives a shirt a completely different look and is a great thing to have in your closet.
Also look into short-sleeve button up shirts. These have become a huge trend and I love them, personally. They go with shorts and they go with jeans. They can be dressed up with a tie or left with a couple buttons undone.
      • Inspiration:
    • DONT: restrict your styling.
      • You can wear patterned shirts, long-sleeve shirts, and short-sleeve shorts with anything; think of them as your tee-shirts. You know what you have in your closet that would go with a cool patterned shirt. Don’t be afraid to try something a little new and maybe a little crazy; stand out from the crowd.
